week 7

Next week…
Math: We will continue with the counting on strategy, focusing on making ten. We will be introduced to the part-part-whole strategy (where 2 parts make up a whole). We will be practicing fact families (2+3=5, 3+2=5).

Science: We will finish up our unit on Changes from Heat with an assessment early in the week.  We will then move on to our next unit: Forms of Energy.  Students will determine sources of light energy and discuss how we use it in our daily lives.

Reading:  Students will learn how to make a text to text connection while they are reading. They will learn how relating something they already read in one book can help them better understand a similar book.

Writing:  Students will continue writing their personal narratives in week two of this five week unit. This week the focus is zooming in on one small moment, ordering story parts, using transition words and verbs, and describing how characters felt.

Balanced Literacy: Students will be exploring past, present, and future in regard to how we celebrate holidays. In Phonics, students will be practicing naming and recognizing letters in a word and understanding the concept of a word.

Stuff the Boot Information
The fundraiser is split up into 5 periods. Third Period just started. If we win a period, our class gets a giant trophy for the week, I get spoiled with a drink from Starbucks, and I believe we get pajama day, too! If we win the entire fundraiser the class will get to silly string me and the principal.
The donations you give go to buy ipads for our school, run math superstars, the spelling bee, pay for teacher appreciation lunch, fund the purchase of new PE equipment, movie night etc. PTA can not run these programs without parents donating.
You can donate online here http://sommerpta.my-pta.org or send in the donation form. If you are matching, PLEASE print out and send in the form or forward the matching document to prove it is being matched. You can forward the matching doc ( a screenshot is great too) to sommerfallfundraiser@gmail.com

We had another great week of learning, be sure you check seesaw to see glimpses of our week! Please use RAZ kids for reading every night, once reading assessments are complete I will update the reading level if needed and begin to assign books via RAZ kids for homework.
Yesterday your child brought home the information for the school fundraiser "stuff the boot". I am attaching a picture of our "boot" with our goal!

Week 4

Dear Parents,

It was very nice to meet so many of you this week at parent night. We had a short but busy week, we finished it off with a visit to our new innovation station, the kids are very excited to explore the new activities.
Starting this week I will send a summary of what we will do the next week, this way you will be informed about it beforehand and can discuss it with your child. I will also post this on our class website. To see what we are learning for the entire month please view the "curriculum calendar" tab on the class website.

Next week...

Math: Students will compare numbers up to 20, read and write numbers up to 20 (expanded, standard, number word, etc), and review place value (ones/tens).

Science: Students will continue to observe, sort, and compare objects based on their properties.  Students will learn that materials that make up objects are different and this is why objects have different properties.  The week will end with a common assessment over Classifying Matter.

Reading:  Students will learn how to make text-to-self connections while they read. They will learn how to get meaning from text by using their prior knowledge to help them better understand what they read.

Writing: Students will work on the writing process. They will look at how to use word patterns to help in their spelling. They will also write words that they know and can spell. Finally, they will look at parts of a sentence and  focus revising and editing their pieces.

Balanced Literacy: Students will learn about what it means to be a good citizen.  We will discuss some examples of good citizens from history.  These include: Benjamin Franklin, Francis Scott Key, and Eleanor Roosevelt.
