week 5 , 2nd 9 weeks

Dear Family,
This week I sent home the permission slip for our 1st grade field trip to The Thinkery.  Please fill out and return the yellow form and the front and back of the green form.  Cost is $7 per student.  Please send in exact cash or check payable to Sommer Elementary.  (Be sure to include your driver's license number and child’s first name on the check.) If you wish to volunteer, please indicate that on the bottom of the yellow form.  You will also need to fill out the district online volunteer form if not previously done this school year.  I will then contact you about chaperone payment.
                                                                
Next Week...
Math: We will be working with 2D/3D shapes and examining their properties. Students will be able to identify & distinguish between solid figures that can roll, stack, and/or slide.

Science: We will wrap up our unit on the physical properties of objects in which we observed, compared, described, and sorted the components of soil by size, texture and color, identified and described natural sources of water and how rocks, soil, and water were used to make products.  At the end of the week, we will begin our unit on weather by learning about and recording the relative temperature.

Reading/Writing:  We will continue our work with fairy tales and their elements. We will be focusing on Cinderella and the various versions included fractured fairy tales. In writing, students will continue creating their own fairy tale and learning strategies to help them make the story more detailed.

Balanced Literacy: In phonics, the students will be working on recognizing the beginning and ending sounds in words as well as changing those sounds to make new words.

Social Studies: The students will be exploring Aesop’s Fables.  They will learn about the lessons that each story teaches as well as make connections, inferences and address any questions they may still have regarding the story.

-It’s that time of the year again!  Science Fair is right around the corner.  Join us in the library for Science Research Night on Wednesday, December 12th from 5:30-6:30. We will have books, rubrics and some science project examples displayed to help your child get in their scientific mindset.  All grade levels may participate, however, only grades 3-5 will be judged and may progress to the regional fair. Science fair projects will be due Friday, January 11 no later than 7:35 am. Students will take projects to their classroom.  Judging will take place on Monday, January 14.
We will need Science Fair Judges on Wednesday, January 14th from 8 a.m. to 12 noon.   No science background needed! Your job will be to talk with students about their science fair project,and fill out simple judging rubrics.   There will be a brief training from8:00-8:15 that day.   It is OK if you cannot help the entire 4 hours, just let us know your availability in your email.  Contact Laure Stroh at Laure_Stroh@roundrockisd.org.

Week 4, 2nd 9 weeks


Math: This week students will work with 2D/3D shapes. Students will describe shapes based on their attributes. Students will also use objects and pictorial models to solve word problems involving joining.

Science: This week students will compare and contrast the properties of soil by size, texture, and color.  We will also identify how rocks, soil, and water are used to make products.

Reading/Writing:  This week we will be learning about the elements of fairy tales.  We will be using our depth and complexity icons to identify the fairy tale elements in the stories we read. Students will use the elements to create and write their own fairy tale.

Balanced Literacy: In Social Studies, the students will be presenting their timelines over their holidays.  In phonics, we will be concentrating on hearing and saying the beginning sounds in words as well as rhyming words.

Week 3 (2nd 9 weeks)


Dear Family,

Last week I sent home a baggy with a letter inside asking you to send in a soil sample to school with your child.  These will be used during science class.  All are due no later than November 12.  Please do not send in any mud.  Thanks so much!
Also due on Monday is the timeline project!


Next Week...
Math: Students will continue with subtraction, focusing on writing number sentences and understanding the bigger number is written first. They will write subtraction sentences using various tools as models (dominoes, dice, pictures). Students will also visualize subtraction stories in their head and act out/model their thinking.

Science: Students will continue their study of physical properties of objects by observing, comparing, describing, and sorting the components of soil by size, texture and color.

Reading:  Students will learn what an inference is and begin making inferences throughout their books.  

Writing:  This is the last week of How-To writing. Students will publish and share their How-To.

Balanced Literacy: In Social Studies, we will be talking about different customs and traditions and will be presenting our timeline projects. In Phonics, we will be recognizing and reading known words and using letter-sound relationships to monitor word-solving accuracy.

Week 2 (2nd 9 Weeks)


We had a busy week of learning with Storybook Character Day in the middle! It was great to see the kids so excited to share their books and costumes with each other!
We took some time in class today to finish our RAZ kids assignments. They know they need to listen, read and answer questions for each book to be complete. I will assign new books today. Also please return report card envelopes and data binders by Monday.

Next Week...
Math: Students will use the language of subtraction with lots of opportunities to explore subtraction situations with words, pictures, objects, and numbers. Students will also explore with 2D and 3D shapes.

Science: Students will identify and describe natural sources of water including streams, lakes, and oceans.

Reading: Students will identify the main idea and important details in their reading.

Writing: This is the second week of a three-week study on How-To writing. This week the focus is using transition words, writing an introduction, using detailed pictures to teach, and revising and editing with a partner.

Balanced Literacy: In Social Studies, students will be learning about the importance of voting and Veteran’s Day. In Phonics, students will continue to practice locating and reading high frequency words.
